Uncertainty in Ethiopia’s Tigray After Militants Take Control

The Ethiopian government has declared a cease-fire in the Tigray region following a takeover of the Tigray capital Mekele by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

The major turn of events comes after eight months of intense fighting in the region. Residents in Mekele reported rebel forces entering Mekele, while interim government officials appointed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, left the city.

This comes as Ethiopia awaits the results of the recently held election which did not include voting in Tigray and several other areas.
