SUDAN

The transitional government and the Sudan Revolutionary Front alliance of armed and other opposition groups are due to sign an historic accord on Saturday in Juba. It is aimed at improving access to power and resources for those in the peripheries seeking redress for past abuses. Crisis Group expert Jonas Horner says the deal is a key component of Sudan’s larger transition from military to civilian rule. Its implementation will be extremely difficult amid Sudan’s foundering economy and in the absence of robust international financial and technical support, of which there is little sign. Ultimately, these hurdles will test the resolve of the parties themselves.
