Islamist extremist group Al Shabaab claimed a suicide bombing targeting a Turkish military base in Mogadishu that killed two civlians. Crisis Group expert Omar Mahmood says the bombing marks an escalation in Al Shabaab’s recent attacks against Turkey insofar as this one directly targeted its military presence in a heavily secured area. The incident suggests that Al-Shabaab increasingly views Turkey as negatively as it does other foreign actors operating in Somalia, and will likely continue to target Ankara’s assets in the country.
