Libya

As Turkish-backed Libyan armed groups moved eastward in preparation for a potential offensive to dislodge Haftar-aligned forces from the strategic coastal city of Sirte, the Egyptian parliament on Monday approved a plan to deploy Egyptian military forces to a “western front” in support of Haftar. Crisis Group expert Claudia Gazzini says there is a growing risk of a direct military confrontation between Turkey and Egypt in Libya should Turkish-backed forces launch a military offensive in central Libya, which Cairo considers a national security threat. An uncontrolled confrontation risks turning Libya into a regional war akin to Syria.
