Sudan’s Hamdok to lead new civilian coalition ‘Resilience’

Sudanese political groups and professional associations opposed to a parallel government initiative announced on Tuesday the formation of the “Civil Democratic Alliance of the Forces of the Revolution – Resistance” (Smoud) led by former Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok.

The announcement follows the dissolution of the “Coordination of the Democratic Civil Forces (Tagadum)” on Monday after disagreements among its components regarding the declaration of a parallel government in areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Each party will now choose a new name.

In a statement received by Sudan Tribune, political and union forces said they “decided to join the Civil Democratic Alliance of the Forces of the Revolution (Smoud) through temporary structures, headed by Abdallah Hamdok.”

The alliance includes the National Umma Party, the Sudanese Congress Party, the National Unified Umma Party, the Sudanese National Party, the Umma National Party, the Tawasul Party, the Nasserist Party, the National Alliance Party, the United Popular Front, the Haq Movement, and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – Revolutionary Democratic Current (SPLM-RDC) the statement said.

It added that the coalition comprises 17 union and professional bodies, including the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate, the Sudan Doctors Committee, the Emergency Lawyers, and the Teachers’ Committee, in addition to eight resistance committees.

The alliance includes civil society figures, including Hadia Hassab al-Bahi, Saleh Ammar, and Bakry Eljack, as well as individuals such as poet Azhari Mohamed Ali, members of the Native Administration, business owners, and people with disabilities.

Tagadum was established in October 2023 to form the broadest alliance against the war and work towards achieving peace and restoring the civilian-led transition.

The statement said that Smoud is committed to taking an independent path that is not biased towards any of the parties to the conflict, to address actions that threaten the country’s unity and violations, protect civilians, address the humanitarian crisis, and complete efforts to stop the war.

The SPLM-RDC called on Sudanese people to support and assist the new alliance.

The movement’s deputy head, Buthina Dinar, said that the establishment of Smoud aims at “full commitment to completing the revolution and building the state, and raising the banner of the civil democratic forces that work to stop and end the war with complete independence.”

In a press statement, she also appealed to all forces that stand with complete independence to stop and end the war and seek to build a broad civil front to complete the steps to build this front.
