As the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty gains support by global powers to end the Sahara conflict, Algeria’s reactions confirm its standing as the real party to the conflict and reduce the Polisario to its actual status of a proxy militia.
Prior to France making its new clear-cut position in support of Morocco’s autonomy plan and its sovereignty over the Sahara, Algeria issued a statement denouncing France and Morocco while threatening to take retaliatory measures.
As soon as the French position was made public, Algeria rushed to recall its ambassador to France. The Polisario reacted later parroting Algeria’s rhetoric.
Algiers had recalled its ambassador to Madrid and took economic retaliatory measures, when Spain backed the autonomy plan as the “most realistic” solution to the Sahara issue.
Algeria’s whimsical reactions not only violate the principle of sovereignty in interfering in a French and Spanish sovereign decision, but it also proves that Algeria is the genuine party to the Sahara conflict.
Algeria’s positions and reactions to sovereign decisions in support of Morocco’s autonomy plan and sovereignty over the Sahara territory show to the international community who blocks any progress towards the autonomy solution, as a win-win, feasible, and realistic solution.
These Algerian hysterical reactions vindicate Morocco’s stand which insists that any resumption of the UN process requires the participation of Algeria, which it rejects.
